More Attentions Should Be Paid on Windows 7 Security Now

January 10th, 2013

Recently, password security and software security in Windows 7 has been widely discussed all around the world. Password security involves in Windows password setup, Windows 7 password recovery, Windows 7 password policies, etc. And software security mainly refers to the malware infection in Windows 7 machines lately.

Just weeks before the release of Windows 8, Microsoft’s Windows 7 has finally topped Windows XP as the most popular global desktop OS. In December, the latest data released by Net Application shows that, though Windows 8 added its market share from 1.09 percent in November to 1.64, Windows 7 has also increased from 44.71 percent in November to 45.11 percent. There is no doubt that Windows 7, a “simpler, faster, more responsive” operation system debuting on Oct. 22, 2009, has been the best-seller operation system in the history of Microsoft. With more and more Windows 7 users, the issue on Windows 7 security becomes extremely important to us.

Many Windows 7 users complain that hackers crack their passwords for many times recently. As we all know, Windows 7 login password is a powerful tool to help users protect hackers or peepers from logging in Windows 7 systems. As for Windows 7 password security, the password policies in Windows 7 should be mentioned firstly. In Windows 7, users can customize their own password policies to ensure password security, including the maximum or minimum password length, password complexity requirement, password age, etc. Therefore, users should check whether their password policies are safe or not every now then. Besides, since forgetting Windows 7 passwords is a common thing, users should choose a reliable way to reset their password when they forget it. Users should have the awareness that many hackers may crack your Windows 7 password when you download or use their malware. Another reason which results to Windows 7 passwords hack may lie in the repeat use of the same password in different occasions.

Besides, malware infection in Windows 7 is also a big puzzle troubled many Windows 7 users these days. According to the Microsoft Security Intelligence Report, comparing the last quarter of 2011 to the first half of 2012, the average number of infected Windows 7 SP1 computers increased by 23% on 32-bit systems and 7% on 64-bit systems. And at the same time, the average number of Windows XP SP3 PCs infected by malware increased by about 10%. In the report, Microsoft analyzes the reason, “This may be caused in part by increasing acceptance and usage of the newest consumer version of Windows,” and they insist, “As the Windows 7 install base has grown up, new users are likely to possess a lower degree of security awareness than the early adopters and be less aware of safe online practices.” Actually, we can do a lot to prevent malware. First of all, be very skeptical of random pop-up windows, error messages and attachments. A lot of malware may be installed when you click on these things. Secondly, if you get a piece of spam, let your mail software know. You’d better develop the habit to remove spam timely. Last but not least, before you install any new software, Google the name of it firstly.

In order to protect your data and information from hacking in Windows 7, more attention should be paid to ensure system security. It is closely related to every user’s privacy and benefit. Take it seriously!

Will Windows Server 2008 Security Performance be lagged far behind by that of Windows Server 2012?

December 27th, 2012

Windows Server 2008Microsoft has released the trail version of Windows Server 2012 in this September. Meanwhile, Microsoft also announces that they will extend Windows Server 2008 support for 18 months. It is indeed welcome news to IT pros who haven’t decided to upgrade to Windows Server 2012 for at least a year. The related issues on the security of Windows Server 2008, such as Windows 2008 password recovery, therefore, still discussed heated recently. And also, users tend to make comparison between the security performances of the two operating systems.

The extension support for Windows Server 2008, the old but still popular operating system, is in order to give IT pros some breathing room so that they can prepare for Windows Server 2012. The new server will probably take a year or more to test and perhaps two or more years to adjust its related applications. Application compatibility is an important reason why the upgrade of Windows Server this time takes so long a time. Many vendors’ applications can only run in a 32-bit environment rather than on Windows Server 2012 in health care field, for instance.

However, the most important reason, I think, lies in the unpredictability of security performance in Windows Server 2012. As we all know, Windows Server 2008 has been generally regarded as one of the safest operation systems. And we can see it is especially welcome by many enterprises considering its powerful security performance. In Windows Server 2012, we can see some features are carried forward in Windows Server 2012. Take Windows Server 2008 password as an example. There are many password policies designed to protect Windows Server 2008 password security. By default, the password created by users need to meet the password complexity requirements, which make it much harder to be cracked. Meanwhile, the password should be changed within a limited time so that hackers have less time to crack the password. Now, in Windows Server 2012, the password policies are almost kept the same.

Early Launch Anti-MalwareWindows Server 2012, as the successor of Windows Server 2008, has been made many changes in order to make the system safer. Firstly, we can see that, just as in Windows 8, Windows Server 2012 uses Early Launch Anti-Malware to prevent unknown drivers to load on boot by default. And Secure Boot is also used to avoid boot code running unless it’s digitally signed so that it is more difficult for malicious code to run at boot time when compared to that in Windows Server 2008. Besides, though the DNSSEC doesn’t work well in non-Windows environment in Windows Server 2008 R2, now, with a GUI, Microsoft develops it to fully interoperable. What’s more, we can see that a network protector mode is designed for BitLocker in Windows Server 2008. Meanwhile, it can support hardware-encrypted drives. In Windows Server 2008, IT administrators have to physically input a password on each boot. As a result, to make the remote administration of encrypted systems seems to be a hard job.

Even so, we may also think of Windows Vista. Microsoft has made great efforts to add many new and advanced functions on Windows Vista. Also, many IT insiders raise high expectation on it. However, by now, there’re too many security flaws have been found in Windows Vista, which results to fewer and fewer Vista users. Will Windows Server 2008 Security Performance be lagged far behind by that of Windows Server 2012? The outcome is still uncertain.

Why Windows 8 Tablets Encounters Bottlenecks? Because of Windows 8 Password?

December 20th, 2012

On October 25, Microsoft officially released the new operating system, Windows 8 and announced the information of Surface tablet, a kind of new tablet based on Windows 8. The release of Windows 8 is different from other operating systems, for it is not only a normal renewal of desktop PC system, but also a mark that tablet PC is about to enter a new era. It’s thin and lightweight, comes with a keyboard cover for better typing, allows you to run the traditional Windows desktop. We can also see many other front-line brands have also launched a variety of Windows 8 tablets, such as Dell, in the following days.

Nevertheless, despite its merits, we have to admit that the sale of Windows 8 tablets around the world is not optimistic at all. As for the reasons, it has been heatedly discussed recently. Some insist that it is due to the flaws in Windows 8 itself, compared to Android and iOS, for example, the new form of password in Windows 8—Picture Password, which is so difficult to remember the gestures and makes users have to deal with Windows 8 password reset frequently. But still others take more factors in Windows 8 tablets into consideration as follows.

A main constraint for Windows 8 tablets’ popularity may lie in their relatively high price, I suppose. Insiders say that a 10-inch Windows 8 tablet PC from first-line brand manufacturers is mostly valued as at least $685. However, the price of a 10-inch Android tablet with NVIDIA Tegra 3 quad-core processors is mostly $275 to $412. We can see that the price gap is quite considerable. Is it worth to pay $799 for a Windows 8 tablet with an Atom processor? Besides, Asus, a mid-range computer vendor, needs $599 for a Windows RT tablet with NVIDIA Tegra ARM? If you want a keyboard for either one, that’s to say, it will cost you an extra $199. Nowadays, consumers look for the best values for what they spend, rather than the latest goods with less value.

On the other hand, although the quantity of software in Windows 8 platform has been developed greatly than that at the beginning of its release, it is still far behind the quantities of Android and iOS software. Besides, Windows RT, a new member of Windows 8, suffers the same problem Windows Phone does, that is, it can only choose very few applications. Due to Windows RT operation system is incompatible with traditional Windows software, consumers’ interest to buy this kind of tablet PC will reduce to a large extent. At the same time, Windows RT won’t let users install programs from any other source but the Windows Store. That’s to say, all you have is the limited selection of tablet apps in the Store.

All in all, the development of Windows 8 tablets is a little disappointed. However, facing this embarrassment, what will Microsoft and other computer companies do? Is there any improvement? We’re looking forward it!
